In that time, some of the best solutions have come from collaboration with our valued customers. We have consulted on pipeline design to lessen abrasion trouble spots and engineered our UT 600 AR pipe to be one of the best-performing solutions in the market. Our experience has taught us that some challenges require new solutions. Below is a case study that provides a quick snapshot of how Ultra Tech came to develop the new Ultra Tech XLE.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>CUSTOMER OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">Valmet<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">\u00a0sand foundry<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">\u00a0in Waukesha, Wisconsin, has been an Ultra Tech customer for over\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">five<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">years.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">Pneumatic sand transport is one of the most difficult applications for any pipeline system. It involves abrasive material moving at high speed, which creates both sliding and impact wear.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">Ultra Tech has<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW245547435 BCX9\">successfully converted numerous sections of their foundry sands pipeline to UT 600 AR steel pipes, resulting in significantly improved durability and cost savings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW245547435 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>PROBLEM<\/strong><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">Despite the overall successful pipe conversions<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">, there\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">remained<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">a few\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">short, 90-degree<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">elbows where our UT 600 could not be installed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">. This is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">\u00a0because<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">\u00a0it is not possible to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">\u00a0f<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">orm<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">an\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">induction-hardened pipe in<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">\u00a0a short,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">90-degree<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">\u00a0bend<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139915759 BCX9\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW139915759 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>SOLUTION<\/strong><\/p><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">The Ultra Tech<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">R&amp;D team, led by John Schantz, decided to tackle the problem with a new solution. Through research and internal testing in our state-of-the-art Metallurgical Lab, we identified a steel chemistry with high manganese content as the ideal starting material.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">The benefit of this steel chemistry is that it\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW261177105 BCX9\">actually hardens<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0over time as it absorbs impact!\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">Our engineering team designed a 90-degree bend that<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">fit<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0within most existing<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0Schedule 80<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0pipeline layouts<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0but\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">it\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">cast with maximum wall thickness on the extrados of the pipe to improve durability where needed most.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">When paired with standard 150# split flanges for easy installation and reusability, the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0new<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a04\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">Ultra Tech\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">XLE\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">(extended life\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">elbow<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW261177105 BCX9\">\u00a0was ready for field testing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW261177105 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong>RESULTS<\/strong><\/p><p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW254486265 BCX9\">Ultra Tech<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW254486265 BCX9\">XLE<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW254486265 BCX9\">\u00a0was installed at Valmet at the top of their silo pipeline that receives sand deliveries. It was in place for a full year and transported over 4 million pounds of sand!
